It must really be a great story if you gave it 10 stars. In breathtaking prose and inspired by true stories from a devastating and little-known era in Japanese and American history, The Woman in the White Kimono illuminates a searing portrait of one woman torn between her culture and her heart, and another woman on a journey to discover the true meaning of home. A life for love is foolish. That anger can lead to further thought and reading. What a moving story this is! This historical/contemporary novel will work its way into your heart and will never let you go. Here’s the thing. Woohoo new fan girl for the author. I haven’t read much in regards to the post WWII period in Japan so I was intrigued at the premise of this book. At the end of the book, the author reveals that this story of an adult daughter who discovers her father loved a Japanese woman (and in this book, conceived a child with her) while he was stationed in Yokosuka after WWII was inspired by her own father’s experiences. Ana Johns is a bewitching storyteller. Oceans and decades apart, two women are inextricably bound by the secrets between them. I thank TLC Book Tours for sending me a copy of The Woman in the White Kimono by Ana Johns at no charge for my honest review. But I was so into the details and amazing story. This seems like such a beautiful and touching story. Great review. This has no effect on my opinion, review or rating. The characters were compellingly drawn, admirable, and strong – yet struggling with limited choices and truly miserable options. Bravo to author Ana Johns! Japanese culture and traditions are a huge part of the book, right from the beginning, and it’s really interesting to read about. The U.S. military also discourages interracial marriages, making it virtually impossible for servicemen to marry Japanese women. Time is a stubborn creature that delights in goading you. Though I found some parts of the book to be a bit predictable, I really liked the way that Ana Johns ended the story. Naoko tells her own story in alternating chapters of how she fell in love and became pregnant in 1957 Japan. ( Log Out /  Sometimes, particularly with the “pusher” part, I almost wished these somewhat well-worn parts of Japan often held up as unique or for entertainment would have been left out of this novel. It felt like these common tropes dragged down an otherwise really heartfelt story. Johns does a great job forming Tori as a daughter who accepts complications into the bond she has with her father and feels the need to journey all the way to Japan to uncover the whole truth, even while realizing that truth is uncomfortable. ( Log Out /  It is very well written and a very compelling read.
